Dateline December 31, 2023: (I forgot to post this here at the time.)
We’ve just returned from a viewing down the road, and very lovely it was. Currently enjoying what may be my new favorite cocktail, The Bee’s Knees, in an attempt to warm up from the foul weather outside. For best results, try it with Barr Hill Gin, one which is made with honey in the processing (delightfully smooth), and of which I received a lovely bottle as a Christmas present.
But, the movie.
It’s the story of the 1936 University of Washington (State not DC) rowing team and their journey to forge a path to represent their country at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (Hitler, Jesse Owens, before WWII, etc.).
UW are the underdogs, for several reasons. I’m a Brit. ‘Nuff said. Naturally, I cheered for them.
What an absolute pleasure to watch a movie with a leisurely pace, an actual plot, a real connection to historical events, actors I’ve never heard of in almost all of the roles, and one with nary an outbreak of serious profanity or obscenity, or even a moment of wokery-pokery (even when it had the opportunity), beginning to end. Bravo–at least in this case–George Clooney!
Highly recommended:
PS: I thought the MGM Lion was in spectacular form, before the opening credits. Until that moment though, I hadn’t realized that MGM now belongs to Amazon….
Sounds like one to check out..
It’s very enjoyable. I like seeing a movie which entertains me and (gently) instructs me or reminds me of what’s important in life. Movies that try to convince me that there’s something wrong with my worldview, and that I’m somehow dysfunctional or antisocial in my opinions just rile me up.
