Well, This is News: Celebrating Odo, Count of Paris, King of France!

February 29.  It only comes around every four years, and next time it does, I’ll be 73 (assuming all goes well between now and then).

I thought I’d look for post inspiration by seeing what historical events the day has on offer, and–in checking Wikipedia (so sue me)–the first thing that came up was this:

[The Year] 888–February 29, Odo, count of Paris, is crowned king of [France] by Archbishop Walter of Sens at Compiègne.

1,136 years ago.  Wow.

Now I spent quite a bit of time, a couple of years ago, trying to find an appropriate name for my new Great Pyrenees puppy.  I finally settled on “Odo,” after discovering St Odo of Urgell, a Catholic saint from the region who died in 1122.

But, apparently, there are other, even earlier, “Odos.”  And today I celebrate them too.

Meanwhile, here’s my Odo:

And, a classic for all time:

Not the last horrible mess he’s ever made.  But I love him anyway.

Happy Leap Day 2024 everyone, to you all and to all those you love.  Life’s horrible messes notwithstanding.
